Pyrakantha

Balmorhea – Pyrakantha by Colin Kennedy
Shot over the course of 42 days in the blue hour, Danny Garcia is our guide through Los Angeles.
From the director:
I’m going to start by stating that this is a music video with skateboarding in it and not the other way around. The concept of including skateboarding in a music video isn’t exactly ground breaking but when Balmorhea asked me to make a video for one of their tracks, I saw it as an opportunity to create my own version of what skating could look like in a music video. The band let me choose which track I’d like to make a video for and when I decided on Pyrakantha, the imagery that immediately came to mind was city lights at twilight. I asked one of my favorite skateboarders and closest friends, Danny Garcia to star in the video and take the viewer on a journey through some of my favorite parts of the city as the final moments of daylight gave way to the night. My goal was to capture that feeling of skating home at the end of a long day, a time of day when it’s not so much about the tricks you’re doing as it is about the journey itself. Hopefully as skateboarders, you can relate to this feeling. – Colin Kennedy

L A N D

(A collage of illustrations by LAND and some b-reel images from 2012).

I had the pleasure of photographing the L A N D dudes last year for Refueled Magazine but wanted to follow up after seeing some of their recent works on display at Farewell Books in Austin. Caleb Everitt and Ryan Rhodes are deeply carving in their patented niche of expert design that possess a largely hand-hewn feel whilst maintaining a clean and composed aesthetic. Their client list is sky-rocketing and it’s quite obvious why.

Ursula Jernberg

I came across the Ursula Jernberg’s work in a roundabout way a few months ago while visiting Claire Cottrell in LA and her Book Stand shop. Claire carried a zine called Sunday Mornings at the River, which I picked up. I visited their website when I got home and found an intriguing book they were selling in limited pressing called “Characters of Jante” by Ursula Jernberg. The prints are segmented into once-folded sheets of photos stacked together and arranged inside the sleeve of the outer cover. It’s a hauntingly beautiful collection of photography that truly captures the calm in these scenes. Jernberg lives and works in Amsterdam and I was lucky enough to rendezvous with her on my recent trip abroad. Really excited to see what she does next!

European Spring, Pt. 7

The final post from this trip. I write this from a hotel in St. Petersburg, Russia about to catch a few winks before a 4am lobby call for our journey homeward. Thanks for following along and for all your support. I’m looking forward to a fruitful spring with new adventures and photos forthcoming!
